Periodontics Q & A

What is periodontics?

Periodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on the health of your periodontium — the oral tissues that hold your teeth in your mouth. Your periodontium is made up of a few different components, but the most prominent part is the gums.

Your gums and the rest of your periodontium are tasked with keeping your teeth firmly enough in place to enable you to properly chew food, but loosely enough so that they’re not prone to injury if they’re hit or put under any sudden pressure.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection of your gum tissue and the leading cause of tooth loss. It develops when plaque and tartar are left to sit on your teeth for too long, which typically happens as a result of poor oral hygiene or having hard-to-reach areas in your smile that your at-home brushing and flossing aren’t cleaning properly.

Plaque and tartar are filled with harmful acids and bacteria that irritate your gum tissue. In the earliest stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, your gums become tender and swollen from the irritation and might bleed when you brush or floss. You can reverse the effects of gingivitis by improving your at-home care and having frequent cleanings with Dr. Kelly. If left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis.

With periodontitis, your gum tissue begins to pull away, or recede, from your teeth. The recession of gum tissue creates pockets between your gums and your teeth that collect debris and bacteria. The accumulated bacteria further irritate your gums and causes them to recede more. This cycle continues until the infection destroys the tissues holding your teeth, leading to tooth loss.

What periodontics treatments do you offer?

Dr. Kelly offers a variety of periodontics treatments at his practice, including:

Minor tooth extraction

Dr. Kelly typically makes every effort to keep as much of your natural tooth structure intact as possible, but there are some situations where a tooth can cause more trouble than it’s worth. If you have a tooth that needs to go, Dr. Kelly can remove it with a safe and effective extraction.

Gum surgery

If you’re suffering from gum disease or periodontitis, Dr. Kelly can perform laser gum surgery to restore your oral health. In this procedure, Dr. Kelly uses a soft tissue laser to remove your compromised gum tissue and eradicate your infection carefully. Soft tissue lasers cauterize and sterilize as they cut, which significantly minimizes the discomfort of the procedure and the length of your recovery time.
