Dental Implant Restoration Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are one of the most modern and revolutionary tools for replacing missing teeth. They’re artificial tooth roots embedded in your jaw with a simple surgical procedure.

As you heal from the procedure, your dental implant fuses with your jaw bone in a process called osseointegration. This process happens because dental implants are made from biocompatible materials, like titanium or zirconium. Your body doesn’t recognize these elements as foreign and readily incorporates them with your jaw.

Once your implants have fused to your jaw, they create a firm foundation to which Dr. Kelly attaches a restorative tooth cap, just like you would be able to do with a natural tooth root. Dental implants can accommodate a variety of restorations, like crowns, bridges, and dentures.

Why do I need to replace missing teeth?

Your smile was designed to function with all of its teeth working in harmony, and when you’re missing teeth, it doesn’t perform as well.

Missing teeth can make it more challenging to speak and chew your food correctly. They also leave an empty hole in your smile that causes your remaining teeth to drift. An improperly aligned smile causes oral health issues, including excessive wear and tear on your teeth and jaw problems like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.

Your teeth also provide stimulation to your jaw, which keeps the bone full and healthy. When you no longer have a tooth root to stimulate the bone, it begins to deteriorate, or resorb. This can lead to a sunken-in appearance as the muscles in your face atrophy around the hole.

How do I get dental implant restorations?

Dr. Kelly occasionally places dental implants at his office, but he primarily performs dental implant restorations, which entails making the crown, bridge, or dentures that attach to your dental implant. For more complex dental implant procedures, Dr. Kelly refers his patients to a local oral surgeon.

Once your implant is firmly in place, Dr. Kelly takes an impression of your smile with dental putty or an oral scanner. He sends that impression to a lab that designs your crown, bridge, or dentures so that they fit perfectly in your mouth.

When your restoration comes back from the lab, Dr. Kelly uses dental cement to permanently bond it to the abutment of your dental implant, giving you a stunning new smile that helps you eat and speak as if you were never missing a tooth in the first place.
